Sports is so good for the mind and even better for the body of a growing child. However, not all children want to get out there and participate in physical activities.
The Nielsen Co. reported that children’s television viewing had reached an eight-year high as of 2009. Children ages 2 to 5 watched TV for more than 32 hours a week. Kids ages 6 to 8 spent 28 hours per week in front of the tube, most likely because they were in school.  The Kaiser Family Foundation also conducted research on the media habits of children ages 8 to 18. Kaiser found that on average, this age group spends 4½ hours each day watching TV in various forms, including on their mobile phones and the Internet.
So, the magic question – how do you get your kids moving? The secret sauce…discover their passion and here is how:
Communication is key!
The first step to beginning any sport is communication. Asking what kind of sport they like, read books about that sports, show them videos on the sport, even take them out to watch the sport live around town. Find out if it is something they are interested in and then sign up!
Try and Try Again!
Not all sports are created equal. Venturing out may be a hit or miss, they may like or dislike it. Be open to exploring different activities until it’s a hit! Now, there is a difference between quitting and exploring. Encourage your child to stay with the sport until they are comfortable and then make a decision if exploring is necessary.
Make it fun!
Developing a sense of rhythm and physical confidence are key to getting kids excited about a sport. Especially if it is a Team sport where they get to see their friends or even make new friends. A Coach that encourages your child is a huge factor in the success of the environment.
Participate!
There is nothing more exciting for a child than when a parent can ‘play’ too. Your participation can help ease any fears or anxiety in this new environment. You can participate just by watching on the sidelines at gymnastics and waving with encouragement or practicing at home together your stretches. This is a great bonding experience for both you and child.
