There are many reasons your child may want to get into tumbling -Cheerleading, Gymnastics and Dance are just some. Tumbling is a great foundation to these activities and can increase motor skills including spatial awareness. So, where do you start? Here are some tips to guide you into tumbling…
First of all.. why?
Tumbling helps create body awareness. From back flips to handstands, your child is learning where their body is in relation to the ceiling, the ground or the mat. One of the hardest senses to learn is spatial awareness. Younger children are not aware of where their body is in relation to other people, the floor, mat, etc. This decreases the chances of injury and increases motor skills.
Secondly.. where?
Choosing the type of facility that provides a tumbling course is crucial to how well your child will do. Here are some things to consider when choosing a place to learn…
- Meet the coach: It is important to meet the person who will largely influence your child in sports. Watch a class in action, is the coach attentive, enthusiastic, safety driven?  A great coach will make all the difference for your child’s experience.
- Facility training tools: Take a tour of the facility, does it have all the tools needed for a growth environment. Clean environment, mats, trampolines and tumble tracks?
- Classes: Find a facility that offers a variety of classes. This will give your child options of growing within the same environment, friends and coaches. Ask if classes have mixed ages or if they are around the same age and times of classes.
Thirdly…take it slow!
When learning a new skill, anxiety and fear may take over. The trick to getting past this anxiety is to take the new movement slow and break it into manageable steps. A good coach will guide your child through this process. Teaching them patience and the fundamentals of tumbling.
